Preparing for the dissertation defense (the "Viva")

I did my promotion in Canada, where the defense of the dissertation is public, so what I'm telling is, as I have prepared under the rules and the standard of the school on my own defense, where I am graduated (the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada). I will not cover other systems because I do not know them well. My own PhD students had to defend similarly with the one I asked my PhD dissertation defense, so I both combine in this blog post.

First of all, when your PhD dissertation advisor told you that "the moment you hate your dissertation is if you are ready to defend," I can confirm 100% that this assertion is absolutely true is. At the time when I submitted my PhD dissertation for the external investigation (six weeks before my Defense Date), I was willing not to look back in all my life. a day before I defended, I still run a practice with a group of cohort friends. I did that in the morning so I could lose the evening, and the next morning too.
On the day of defense, I have absolutely nothing connected to my research. I have breakfast with my partner, went for a walk, called my family by phone, brought my laptop to the campus (also the presentation stored in a USB and sent to myself).
In the defense, I ran through my talk, and prepared for the questions by having water jug ??and a notepad and a pen nearby.

A few tips that I can offer based on my own defense and my doctoral students:

make your presentation short . Keep each additional material in slides after the final slide of your presentation. This was an amazing advice from my promotion consultant, which I have now kept for all my talks, as I am a professor.

Practice, practice, practice. At the time when I did my presentation that I've rocked by the way, I was the world's leading expert in my topic, and I was able to convince people of my findings and arguments.
