5 Simple ways to teach summary skills

Teaching students, as they summarize a text, is important ...

So important that it is part of the CCSS reading standards for literature and information texts starting in grade 4 and continue (with greater rigor) to 12th grade.

As a pedagogue we know why the summary of the students will help:

  • improve the reading understanding
  • filter main ideas from details
  • follow arguments
  • identify the license plate
  • understand the topic
  • Differentiate the act of opinion
  • Analysis Texts

But what are teaching summarize?

You find 7 strategies in the video below - but do not forget to read 5 more ways to summarize! (many possibilities, but no mathematics required!)

7 summary strategies:

Read more options for teaching summary skills.

1. Use the right text

Students can not summarize what they can not understand.

Make sure you offer the scaffolding for students who need it - graphical organizers, understanding issues, multiple measurements, reduce difficult passages in small sections - whatever it takes. Do not ask your students to summarize something that they do not understand.

Texts Use Knowledge Your students can read. Even with a picture book, the concept of summary of students who fight are collapse.

2. Use a mentor text for the year

Have you read the original wonderful wizard of oz from L. Frank tree or the reputation of the wilderness by Jack London? The use of the first chapter of one (or both) of these books can help students really in the summaries (and so much more to dig, but that's for another post!).

Since both texts are public, you can print an excerpt or give the students a digital connection. Students bring back the same text throughout the year, gives them more than just an opportunity to summarize. It too:

  • offers you a way to help students analyze the writer's craft
  • deconstruct as the author Ideas organizes
  • paragraph and sentence structure analyze
  • look at the character development on

If you use a mentor text to summarize the students, they can repay them again and again, as the year progresses - students have a reference point.

Do not forget that your mentor text can also be used in your book clubs or literary circuits . In this way, you can create a foundation as lessons with the text.

3. Have some fun with it

What would happen if you requested your Middle school students to summarize a captain underpants or diary of a Wimpy kid books or a favorite comic book ? Are the students of the middle school ever to tire for Captain underpants?! Eh, no. Not only do you knock a bit of nostalgia for you, you can introduce the question "What is the big idea" in history?

Students have to filter out the stupid details to get to the most important ideas of the text. Short chapter and easy to load books like these make the students a great opportunity to view the elements of the property. Since there are no big undersgrades, the most important points are clear to their students.

4. Use short film, TV, or commercials

Who can do this iconic i love lucy episode?

I love this episode of i love lucy. Not only is it a classic, it's perfect to help the students summarize. What's going on here? What is the problem? What are the great ideas of the scene? Here, too, the students have to filter out the details and get to the heart of events.

Another reason to love short video clips:

  • You can view it several times with your students. As I mentioned in the teaching mechanics post, students can first analyze understanding and then again.
  • students love to see old television broadcasts and commercials!
  • So much remains unsaid that the students must have in a row in a row. Just look at Lucy's face when the conveyor belt accelerates!
  • The students can practice the same skills with different videos - as they gain trust, they can go over to texts.

5. Create a graphical new page

I love to use graphic novel employees to help students summarize. Most of graphic novels and comic books that are history through the pictures and dialogue - and the great ideas of history.

Here you can help with comic book or graphical novel pages to summarize your students:

  • start analyzing a few pages of a graphical novel. The students will find that history is told much unlike a traditional novel or a short story.
  • The students will find that if the story was tendered, much longer and more details require. For example, the author would like to include what the character did or felt. The writer may want to describe the attitude or action. In a graphic novel, the author illustrates this.
  • now turn the concept. Enter the students a short text and a graphic organizer. If you would create a graphic novel out of the text, what would the panels be? Before the students actually create the graphic novel side, make sure they understand the great ideas they will illustrate.
  • Allow the students to create their ideas to create a graphic new page. Since the students have only a limited number of boxes on their graphic novel side, they are limited to the great ideas. You must briefly convey the story - you need to give enough details to tell the story, but not stated. The heart of summaries!

Do you need more help?

You can use my summary activities: Create a graphical novel to support this lesson. Students can use the texts, graphics organizers and graphic novel blank pages to practice their own summary capabilities.

reasons why this works:

  • students love to analyze short, stupid texts and videos!
  • multiple options to summarize together capabilities in a relaxed manner.
  • easy to practice, practicing several times with a variety of texts - the students' skills really strengthen.
  • Additional advantages include inference practice, character and plot analysis, discussion and problem solving.

What do you think? Would your students like to create a visual summary? Would you answer videos or how would you feel like a primary school Favorite like Captain underpants?
