How much else in life, a rite of the passage for doctoral students has gone virtual during the Covid-19: Doctoral thesis in which students present their research and field questions from the faculty before receiving a degree.
You enter this event as a student. They leave as a newly embossed promotion.
For Luisa Angeles in the Department of Chemistry, this milestone took place in the afternoon of April 21st. It happened on zoom.
On the bright site, her parents and siblings in Asia were part of signing at 13 o'clock. In the Philippines. On a less happy note, the celebration was not the same afterwards, as it would have been personal despite a virtual toast.
As far as all between - the actual defense - the experience was a bit strange, but it was pretty smooth, says Angeles.
"I'm really happy," she says. "It's a thing that feel really good for me that I could finish everything. I had to defend my thesis before I can start a job - even if the pandemic is going on."
Angeles was the first student in the UB Chemical Department to defend a promotion online during the pandemic.
If she learned in March, she would have to defend practically, "I really wanted to go through him," she says. "I thought it was agony, which waits whether the social distance rules would change."
For their dissertation research, they developed laboratory techniques for recognizing chemicals such as antibiotics, pesticides and industrial connections in the environment. It also introduced these analytical methods to work to identify pollutants found in waterways such as rivers and lakes, and in water released from wastewater treatment plants.
Some tips from Angeles on preparation for a virtual defense:
Before defense, "I was still nervous in the same way I was nervous when he would be personal," Angeles says. "I appreciate the support of all who helped me because it's really a difficult time to do a defense because there is a lot of stress and fear."
With their time in the UB, Angeles will go to North Carolina soon, where they landed a job as a chemist with a company specializing in the analytical chemistry. The job interview took place on zoom, and a visit to the laboratories of the company in FaceTime.

The end of the PhD journey is called a joyous moment at a time when so much is enough.
Both Angeles and their consultant, chemistry professor Diana Aga, say that the best part of the zoom defense was that Angeles' family in the Philippines allowed to participate. These included Angeles parents whose plans to travel in Buffalo, due to the pandemic and to Angeles three siblings could be canceled, which otherwise can not participate.
"It was actually a bit emotionally in the end, when Luisa's parents gave their daughter a congratulation message," says Aga, Henry M. Woodburn Professor of Chemistry at the University of Art and Sciences. "Parents choked tears back as they talked. Their younger sister who is in the Philippines at the college also almost participated. Incidentally, it is also a chemistry student for a chemistry, so she has a good idea now, a PhD defense is expected. "
The defense brought people together in a special way. A faculty member who had recently had a baby, could attend without going home. A former absolute student, who has announced Angeles of Luxembourg, where he did postdoctoral research.
Somehow, the worst part of the defense of the zoom could not really celebrate together, say Aga and Angeles.
Before the pandemic, Agas team would sign a successful defense with a number of traditions. Friends and colleagues would collect themselves, and the student who has just defended, would add their name to the door of a laboratory freezer, who holds the signatures of a long line of past graduates. Although Angeles was able in early May as they stopped campus to return keys to Aga, the ritual was a quieter. Only Angeles, her husband and their aga were present.
After the past, "my students would give the successful graduate also a gift and a card, say congratulatory words and photos, says AGA." We miss all these. "
"It's just happier, more fun if they are all together," says Angeles. "Usually after defense we would share the food and celebrate together. I think I think I'm just thinking of a frenen event. I missed that."
